Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
