Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
